Problem with Netflix RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi

The question is : Is the cause  of the problem the VPN or Windows?

I am using Windows 8.1 accessing Netflix over a VPN on a little Intel NUC.

Silverlight is installed. I am running program from the desktop.

I keep getting this error on the Windows Log:

The program LiveComm.exe version 17.5.9600.20498 stopped interacting with Windows and was closed. To see if more information about the problem is available, check the problem history in the Action Center control panel.

  • Hi,

    see http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_7-windows_programs/vpn-error-868-the-name-of-the-remote-access-server/649fb5d3-674e-447b-9dca-13e7e09b95fc

    or post to...

    http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/ForefrontedgeVPN/threads

the first step in troubleshooting web browser issues is to test in noAddons mode.

does the problem appear in Immersive IE?

    Regards.

  • Thanks Rob

If by immersive mode you mean ticking the  box "open internet explorer tiles on the desktop"  in internet options/programs  it had no effect.

Disabling all addons ( there are only 3 as this is a new install) had no effect.

  • Hi John,

also try the suggested solutions from the answers thread that I posted....

there are answers there that it is caused by forefront security settings....

Somebody else may like to pitch in as I am on Win7 exclusively for the next few weeks and don't have access to my win8 machines.

    Regards.

  • HI Rob

What is interesting is that if I use the Netflix app in Windows 8.1. it come back, after a lot of internet activity, with the comment that the computer is in the wrong geographic zone etc.  I wonder what it is using to determine this?

Under windows 8.1 desktop, it comes back with an error that infers that the audio is nor working -  which is wrong as other sites happily use the audio.

  • Hi,

Allow websites to use your location geolocation settings... or as a fallback the nationality/geolocation of your ISP server center or (though incorrect) your windows or IE language settings....

In IE Options... IE desktop>Tools>Internet Options>General tab, 'Languages', ensure you have 'en-us' at the top of the list. If you have any custom language settings (your VPN may be sending a custom language token)eg... foo-en , delete them from the list....

If you have a network sniffing tool like fiddler or wireshank fire it up to capture the requests and inspect the accept tokens... en-us should be at the top of the list of accepted languages.

    and

from the Immersive Start>Charms bar>PC Settings>Region and language settings, ensure you have selected US English as your language and you location is a US territory or State. (I am not sure if Netflix support all US states and territories.)

You will need to do the same with your VPN server...

I live in Oz and have a hosted server in Sunnyvale CA, so I don't have access to Netflix content, no matter what my PC settings. The server is configured and located for the US.

Additionally, from desktop IE...Internet Options>Advanced tab,, check "Enable alternative codecs in HTML5 elements" under the Multi-media section.

It sounds likely that your PC or VPN server location and language settings are the issue. Not Forefront as the suggested answers suggest.

Where did you buy your PC?

    Regards.
