error when resetting password in AD :Windows cannot access object <username> no such interface supported RRS feed

  • Morning campers!

    hope someone can help with this, im getting this error message when i right click a user and go to reset password in AD,

    Windows cannot access object <username>
    No such interface supported
    The object may have been deleted by another administrator in this enterprise

    now i also get an error when i try and create a new user in AD.

    The system i am using is windows server 2003 SBS SP2 with all updates done apart from .net security update, event logs are blue with no errors so i have nothing to go on i have searched the net for days but can not come up with an answer please help :)

  • From where you are trying to reset the password from directly from the server or you have installed administrative tools in of the client and trying from there ?

    Please post dcdiag /v report

    i am doing the task via AD on the server, i have also tried the sbs console and i get the same message.

  • Thanks for the post I can see that there is was Windows 2000 Server on your network which is no more replicating with the DC. Please perform a metadata cleanup remove the old retired dc and let us know. ""Before Doing this Please take the backups"

    i went through the above util but when i got to list servers in site the only server in there was the current server which im having the problem with so no old one to take out?

  • i will check sites and services, but in answer to your other question the error is

    An error occured. Contact your system administrator.

    thats all i get nothing in event viewer, and this is the last step of the wizard when you click finish/ok.

  • Couple of more things to try

    From a command prompt run the following and post (Looking to see if you have a multihomed dc)

    ipconfig /all

    dnslint /ad /s "ip address of your dc"

    Rerun dcdiag with the following switches

    DCDIAG /V /C /D /E /s:yourdcname > c:\dcdiag.log

    Also, I don't see any issue with you having a metadata problem.

  • Everything looks good. ???

    My suspect is the gui interface.  Try loading the latest set of server tools on a client machine and try the same password reset again.  Other than that, I'm stumped.  I have no other idea on what it could be.

  • thanks for your help paul, this is the problem im having the server logs are blue, indicating no errors at all and the server runs and works fine apart from this issue. i can not see anything that has changed since the last time a user was added apart from windows updates but sadly im un sure to when it last worked must be 2 months ago.

    there was an issue with .net but this has since been re-installed do you think this would cause the problem? 

    i shall keep the thread informed of what the outcome is as there are other people with this error on the net but no fix as such.

  • That is why I recommend you load the server tools on another machine.  This will show if the problem is related to the server (The tool set) or AD.  I think AD is fine and is actually the interface.

  • ok i have been working on this over the weekend, and managed to load the server tools on a laptop and was finally able to reset and create user accountd, so looks like the interface is a bit messed up on the server, anyone know how to repair this?

    What domain level are you functioning at? I might have missed that information or it wasn't posted. I'm curious if the upgrade from previous versions that evidently occured at one point completed successfully or if there's just some wierd activity with your MMC snapins. Any strange updates lately? Reset of the Domain Administrator password will deny these privileges as well if you didn't logout afterwards and login again to perform admin duties.

    Well if you have a secondary DC, backup everything. To be safe I would migrate the roles over to a new system. If you can migrate all of the DC, GC, and DS Roles over to a new AD server, it might be worth it to give that system a fresh install to make sure that theres nothing wrong with that system.

    Now.. from all of this, I assume that this is using a single DC/GC setup.

    I would say perform backup and recover with NTDSUTIL using IFM media on a clean install would be great but not to guarantee recovery and uptime. If you have the resources to just virtualize a server, even on your laptop that can replicate that data safely to and perform a clean install for this system as a bare metal installation, that would even be better. So when you bring that server back online. You role data back to that new instance of Server 2008 just using normal replication and role delegations.

    Either way you decide to make sure that your domain controller has full integrity is ultimately up to you. I hope my questions and answers have intrigued your mind enough to resolve this issue by thinking of other options and ideas.

  • thanks for the input steve, im thinking its an issue with .net as it will not update certain .net files but this will take some time to figure out ( and many reboots)

    Sadly no Secondary DC this is an sbs 2003 which is mission critical so unable to give it a clean install (all exchange and network programs on on the box and no other server to put it all on )

  • There is a password reset product that I have used over the years to reset Windows admin passwords on workstations, servers and domain administrator accounts on domain servers.  You must use the "Enterprise" version of the Windows Key application to reset the domain administrator account. Then use the ntdsutil command to reset the restore mode admin password as well. Here is the url for that software:
