Creating VM from Templates hangs @ Customize Virtual Machine step RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi,

I tried to follow the steps mentioned in http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ee702479.aspx for converting a VM into a template and storing it in the library. After successfully creating a template - I started to create new VM using the template.

Creation of VM always hangs at the step "Customize Virtual Machine" - 71%.

  • Hi,

did you enter the product key in the OS profile? If yes, is it the correct key for that vm? You need to make sure that you configure the correct key in the os profile otherwise the automated installation process will stop.

    hope that helps,

    Gunter

  • I tried connecting to the VM - when the step "Customize Virtual machine" is still running and I found that eh propcess was stuck at "Windows Product Key" screen.
It just needed an Enter to proceed further.
Any thoughts why this screen waits for the user input rather than proceeding automatically.

  • Another common issue is that the local administrator password must be blank.

This can also be caused by a timing issue that is created when the VM being deployed is joined to a domain during sysprep and thus a policy is applied that does not allow a blank local administrator password, and thus the remainder of the customization is not allowed to finish.

When you check the console of the VM, what state is it in?  Is it usable?  How far was it customized?

Checking the console of the VM and assessing its state in the deployment process is important to understanding the failure.
