AD FS Database migration RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hello.

    We have a AD FS 3.0 running with databases on SQL server 2008 however the DB admins now want to move all databases to a new 2014 cluster.
    I have been looking around for information on steps to take to migrate the Artifact and config databases from SQL 2008 to SQL 2014 but can't find any good information. There's allot of guides on moving from WID to SQL but not the way we need.

    Anyone here that can help me on how to go about with this?

    Thanks in advance
    Lee

  • These are basically the same steps as for a WID migration.

    1. You stop the ADFS and DRS services.
    2. You export import the both DBs to your new SQL server (AdfsConfigration and AdfsArtifactStore).
    3. You make sure that the ADFS service account has the db_genevaserivce role on both DBs.
    4. You change the DB on each server:
      $changedb = Get-WmiObject -Namespace root/ADFS -Class SecurityTokenService
      $changedb.ConfigurationdatabaseConnectionstring="data source=[SQLServer\Instance]; initial catalog=adfsconfiguration;integrated security=true"
      $changedb.put()
    5. Start the services, run the following:
      Set-AdfsProperties -ArtifactDbConnection "Data Source=[sqlserver\instance];Initial Catalog=AdfsArtifactStore;Integrated Security=True"

    6. Restart the services and voila!

    If you are not familiar the process, ensure you test in a lab. The service will be interrupted during the operation. So make sure you do that at the right moment. And more importantly, make sure you have a backup of everything (DBs, system, certs and associated privates keys...).
