Server 2012 hyper-v replication RRS feed

  • Question

  • hello,

we currently replicate our DC to a hyper-v 2008 server using Double-Take. The VM lies dormant/off during replication and can be powered on when failover is required. I want to upgrade the hyper-V server to 2012 and then use the new built in replication tool to replicate the VM across to another offsite 2012 server. My question is does the VM have to be powered on to replicate between two 2012 hyper-v servers? this would not work for me as I need the VM to be powered off to allow for the Double-Take replication. Another issue might be that Double take process might prevent hyper-v replication in the first place.

  • Hi ,

There is no need to turn on the VM if you need the 2012 Hyper-V replica.

But I would change the design, run 1 hardware-based DC, one VM as second DC on hyper-V and replicate the VM to the offsite-Hyper-V.

You’ll get a better failure safety.
