I have Skype for business on my university (windows) desktop which works fine but I use an iMac at home and the functionality is not the same. There is no facility to share a powerpoint or programme file. Is there a way around this other than simply using
the 'Share desktop' option?

Not yet. They are slowly adding additional features to the Mac client. For Meetings, you could use the Web Plugin as an alternative, which has all of the features.
