RDS Installation on Virtual Machine RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hey everyone,

I have a new server running Server 2012 Standard. I have installed Hyper-V and created two virtual machines. So my setup is this:

    Physical machine running as DC.

Virtual machine 1 running as SQL server for business software system.

Virtual machine 2 for Remote Desktop Services.

We have three computers that need to be able to access a virtual desktop on the virtual server running remote desktop services.

The problem I am having is that when I go to the "Add Roles and Features" and select "Remote Desktop Services Installation" on the virtual machine, when it gets to the compatibility check, it fails with the message "Hardware-assisted virtualization is not present on the server."

I researched that error and found that it usually has to do with a bios setting under processors. I check that setting and it is correct. I then tried the same process on the physical machine (my DC, which I know is not recommended) and it did not come up with that error. So I can install remote desktop services on my DC (physical machine), but not the virtual machine. Is there a setting on the virtual machine that will enable hardware assisted virtualization?

I am getting the feeling that I can not install RDS on a virtual machine, but isn't that a big part of what virtual machines were made for?

Consider me confused. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

The server is a brand new Dell Power Edge T420 with 64 gig of RAM and dual Xeon processors.

  • Hi,

Based on your description it sounds like you are choosing the wrong RDS Deployment scenario when running the Add Roles and Features Wizard -- RDS Install.  Please choose Session-based desktop deployment.

    Thanks.

  • Hey TP,

Thanks for the quick answer. You were right, that solved it.

I guess I misunderstood the difference between Virtual machine based and session based.

    Thanks again for your help.
