lmtp - Not delivering message with duplicate Message-ID RRS feed

  • Hello, all. I disapointed by generation the header same Message-Id in Outlook, if user make fast reply and sent on own reply.


    If server of recipient use deduplication based on unique Message-Id then next message will be lost : in logs string lmtp - Not delivering message with duplicate Message-ID
    I know about several lost messages by this problem.


    I see such conditions problem:
    1)I see header X-Mailer: Microsoft Outlook 16.0 in such messages
    2)User used pop3/smtp in the outlook .
    3) Outlook 2016 Professional Plus version 1906 build 11727.20224
    4) User make reply on own reply
    5) This problem happen not always
    6) After first reply passed little time before next reply on own first reply



    The error in software Microsoft Outlook Professional Plus 2016. Duplicate Message-Id is created by Outlook 2016 . I see that by fact Message-Id in these messages same as "!&!AAAAAAAAAAAYAAAAAAAAAIFxOiW5BEBNjoMFW0C/nGPCgAAAEAAAANlK7cDhTd1Csmcq3tu+hxcBAAAAAA==@"

    The mail server Zimbra, Mta agent postfix generate same as headers 581679074.36659376.1573463669683.JavaMail.zimbra@ ,  postfix mta: 20191111030034.12BDCC0CD685@

    And headers same as "!&!AAAAAAAAAAAYAAAAAAAAAIFxOiW5BEBNjoMFW0C/nGPCgAAAEAAAANlK7cDhTd1Csmcq3tu+hxcBAAAAAA==@" I see only in the mails , that sent Outlook


    RFC2392 confirms that 'both message-id and content-id are required to be globally unique

    According to my research, different email account server may has a different way to create message-ID. Such as Exchange account, the messages - ID is created by server rather than Outlook client. If you think this is a problem in Outlook, it is suggested to submit your feedback via the Outlook UserVoice forum.

    According to my test and research, the messgae id is created by your email server rather than Outlook client. You may try testing on your web mail and see if there is any difference.

  • Hi. The mail server create beautiful message_id only if then header Message-ID is not set and option fix_headers is set


    Examples of Message-ID sources:
     Outlook : !&!AAAAAAAAAAAYAAAAAAAAAIFxOiW5BEBNjoMFW0C/nGPCgAAAEAAAANlK7cDhTd1Csmcq3tu+hxcBAAAAAA==@

     mail server : 581679074.36659376.1573463669683.JavaMail.zimbra@
     Thunderbird: 8add35f9-5ff9-08d2-d2b7-d114d36c6c8f@
     postfix mta: 20191111030034.12BDCC0CD685@


    100 % the problem message_id created by Outlook.
    I think that it is a tech error in application

    "You may try testing on your web mail and see if there is any difference."
    It is the Microsoft Outlook - desktop application.

  • This problem is hard to reproduce. probably the users make very fast write reply and send and next fast write reply of reply and send

  • If it make value in this discussion, the user Outlook pst file contain a lot of messages and this file is a huge size

  • And this problem detected for several users, who reply via Microsoft Outlook. They used pop3 and the messages in Sent folder not contain Message-Id.

    If generation this header in the Outlook depends from timestamp with bad precision, i think may be source of the problem

    I think it is wrong answer 90%. I discuss specific software. I have reasons to decide that it is a error in Microsoft Outlook 2016.
