Windows 2012 server:The system failed to register pointer (PTR) resource records (RRs) for network adapter with settings: RRS feed

  • Question

  • Keep getting this error in the event logs and i tried to run ipconfig /registerdns with no luck. I only see the errors with the SQL servers. Dynamic update is setup for DHCP servers, however this vlan is not setup for DHCP it's setup for static addresses. Any advise will be greatly appreciated.

    User:          NETWORK SERVICE
    Computer:      sql.me.com
    Description:
The system failed to register pointer (PTR) resource records (RRs) for network adapter
    with settings:

               Adapter Name : {AFD51B58-6EC7-422D-8135-73C7D1469936}
               Host Name : sql.me.com
               Adapter-specific Domain Suffix : picotrading.com
               DNS server list :
                  192.168.7.50, 192.168.7.52
Sent update to server : <?>
               IP Address :
                 192.168.6.30

The reason that the system could not register these RRs was because the DNS server refused the update request.

The cause of this could be (a) your computer is not allowed to update the adapter-specified DNS domain name, or

    (b) because the DNS server authoritative for the specified name does not support the DNS dynamic update

    protocol.

To register the DNS pointer (PTR) resource records using the specific DNS domain name and IP addresses for this

adapter, contact your DNS server or network systems administrator.

  • Hi Jac0810,

    1. Check if you have created the reverse lookup zone 6.168.192.in-addr.arpa for record 192.168.6.30.

    2. Check what is the type of dynamic update type, choose "Nonsecure and secure" and check if it could work.

    3. As a workaround, you may manually create the PTR record in the reverse lookup zone.

    Best Regards,

    Anne

  • I show it in the reverse lookup zone. I see two entries.

Where do I check for the dynamic update type? "nonsecure and secure"
