Internet Explorer Not Working - either from start menu or directly from program files. RRS feed

  • Question

  • I was asked to re-post this to this forum, so I am.

A while back, something called freeze.net hijacked my browser.  I searched the net and followed steps to get rid of it, which I think I did.

During the process, I believe that IE8 was uninstalled.  Now, if my computer tries to run updates for IE7 or the IE8, it just keeps spinning and spinning and never updates.

If you open IE from the start menu, it says IE add-ins disabled, and won't let you do anything else.  It won't even let you close it.  Instead, you must close with the task manger.

If you open IE from the program files it says "Customize Your Settings," and again will not let you do anything else, including closing it.

I am running Firefox for my browser, and it seems to be OK.

I don't know if the freeze.net thing did this or not, but thought I'd throw it out there.  Thanks so much for your help.

I am running Windows XP.  Microsoft Office 2007.

Here are the rest of the posts.  Thanks for any help you can give:

    Hi ALFisher,

Thank you for posting your query in the Microsoft Community Forums.

Internet Explorer helps you connect to the world. Nowadays, virtually everything can be done on the Internet from the comfort of your home. You have an issue with Internet Explorer not working. It can be difficult when something that is important to you does not work as expected. It is pretty simple and we are here to help you fix the issue. We will work as a team and get this sorted out.

    Please answer these questions-

    1) What is the exact error message when you try to open Internet Explorer?

    2) What is the error message when you try to install updates for Internet Explorer?

    3)    Is this issue limited to Internet Explorer?

    4)    Have you made any other changes on the computer prior to the issue?

I would like more information regarding the issue.

    Method 1-

You need to first check as to which version of Internet Explorer is installed on the computer.

    Refer the link-

Which version of Internet Explorer am I using?

    http://windows.microsoft.com/en-IN/internet-explorer/which-version-am-i-using#ie=ie-8

The article applies to Windows XP as well. Do get back to us and let us know.

    Method 2-

I would have you run the fixits-

Fix Internet Explorer add-on problems when IE hangs or freezes

    http://support.microsoft.com/mats/ie_freezes_or_crashes/en-us

Fix Internet Explorer issues to make IE fast, safe and stable

    http://support.microsoft.com/mats/ie_performance_and_safety/en-us

Now, try to access Internet Explorer. Check if the issue persists.

    Method 3-

I would have you try logging into Safe Mode with networking.

    Refer the link-

To start the computer in safe mode

    http://www.microsoft.com/resources/documentation/windows/xp/all/proddocs/en-us/boot_failsafe.mspx?mfr=true

Note: Make sure you get the computer back to Normal Mode after performing all the troubleshooting steps.

You need to select “Safe Mode with Networking” instead of “Safe Mode”.

You can also try running a virus scan in Safe Mode with Networking only after installing the scanner in the Normal Mode.

    Refer the link-

    http://www.microsoft.com/security/scanner/en-us/default.aspx

Note: The antivirus will try to repair bad sectors on the hard drive damaged by virus. Any data present on these sectors might be lost in the process.

Additionally, I would have you refer the articles for reference-

    Nirmal S,

    Thanks for the reply.

I cannot tell you what version of IE is running because every time I "open" it, the help menu is not available.  I can click on help and click on "About IE" but nothing will open to tell me what version it is.

I do not receive an error message when attempting to install updates.  It simply just keeps "installing" forever and never finishes.  No error message comes up.  It just says "installing updates 1 of 2" and keeps doing that forever.  The only two updates are a security update for IE 7 and IE itself.  Neither will install.

When you say "is this issue limited to IE"? I am not sure what you mean.  Do you mean do I have problems with other programs?  If so, the answer is, yes.  I can  no longer open Word Perfect on my computer, and I get an outlook error message, which I cannot remember, but outlook seems to be running fine.

Prior to the issue, the only changes I made were to attempt to remove freeze.net using CC cleaner, and to uninstall IE8 when removing freeze.net did not solve the problem.

"Fix It" does not work.  When I try to run it, I receive an error that says "troubleshooter has encountered an unexpected error and needs to close" or something to that effect.

As for Safe Mode, I know how to boot up in safe mode, but what would you have me do once there?  Just try to open IE?  If so, that doesn't work.

When installing the updates, this is what I get:

    Initializing installation... done!
Installing Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer 8 Dynamic Installer for Windows XP (KB982381) (update 1 of 6)... failed!
Installing Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer 8 Dynamic Installer for Windows XP (KB2744842) (update 2 of 6)... failed!
Installing Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer 8 Dynamic Installer for Windows XP (KB2761465) (update 3 of 6)... failed!
Installing Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer 8 Dynamic Installer for Windows XP (KB2618444) (update 4 of 6)... failed!
Installing Security Update for Windows XP (KB2753842) (update 5 of 6)... done!
Installing Internet Explorer 8 for Windows XP (update 6 of 6)...

Then, it just keeps trying to install IE with no result.

I've tried multiple scans, but will try another, I suppose.

    Hi ALFisher,

Thank you for keeping us posted and sharing this information with us.

It is possible that the user account itself is corrupt.

I would have you create a new one and check.

I created a new user account (had to go through local users because of domain), and it wouldn't work.  It would simply hang up on the "personalizing settings" portion of IE.

This is really aggravating.  Don't know what else to do.

    Hi,

Thank you for keeping us posted and sharing this information with us.

    Please answer the question-

Are you connected to a Domain network environment?

If yes, then I would have you post here

Do get back to us for any queries pertaining to Windows in the future. We will be happy to help.

    Thanks.
