sbs 2008 to server 2012r2 essentials RRS feed

  • Question

  • really confusing trying to find any documentation that shows me how to migrate my existing sbs 2008 to windows server 2012 r2 essentials with Hyper-V.

we currently have sbs2008 running exchange 2007 and share point with 4 users. running on 1 server

I downloaded windows server essentials 2012 r2 with Hyper-V. Trying to figure out what I need and steps, total newbie in this process.

    1. I've read exchange is not supported in essentials, which is ok, I'm not going to use going forward, doing offsite.

    2. To use Share point, I have read I can put on a vm and use free share point foundation and sql2014 express.

My new configuration after migration would be new server

I'm thinking since from the iso downloaded, windows server 2012 r2 with essentials install with Hyper-V active. that would be my new domain and I'd spin up a vm using same iso and install share point foundation 2013 and sql2014 express on there.

Is this correct and within the proper licensing?

2 It has Hyper-V role active by default?
in general,we need to install hyper-v role on wse2012 manually.

yes,we can install only one wse 2012r2 guest vm instance on hyper-v wse2012r2 host ,the wse2012 vm license is bind to the host wse2012r2 host.

did you download wse2012r2 evaluation from below website ? there is no product key for evaluation version wse2012 r2,we need to buy retail wse2012r2 product key or volume license wse2012r2 product key.

1 did you download server 2012 r2 hpyer-v version and install server 2012r2 essentials version on it?
or you download server 2012 r2 essentials version with only hpyer-v role then install server essentials 2012 r2 on server essential 2012 r2 with only hpyer-v role host ?

  • The best way to migrate to 2012R2 Essentials and virtualize that server is to use the free Hyper-V server from Microsoft. See https://www.server-essentials.com/support/tag/hyper-v and https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/evalcenter/evaluate-hyper-v-server-2012-r2

  • Sorry, haven't gotten back, but I guess I downloaded windows server 2012 r2 essentials with update. It has Hyper-V role active by default?

It installed windows server 2012 r2 essentials with access to hyper -v, as I guess an addon.

since it looks like complete operating system, and prompts to configure essentials, I assume that is one license and I can spin up a vm from hyper manager for other?

I did try the free hyper but it doesn't have a gui, that is why I downloaded server 2012r2 essentials w/Hyper-V, but now I not seeing that in my downloads or product keys.
