How can I get access to local drive c after I accidentally denied permisssions to authenicated users?- RRS feed

  • Question

  • I was looking at the permissions and clicked deny. I soon realized I denied myself permissions to very important files. I've tried pretty much everything with no luck.

    local drive c>properties>security>change ownership>access denied

command prompt>TAKEDOWN /F d:\>ERROR: File ownership cannot be applied on insecure file systems; there is no support for ACLs.

command prompt>ICACLS D:\ grant administrators:F> Invalid parameter "grant"

  • Hi,

According to your description, I suppose that you log in as a non-administrator. Thus, I suggest that you log in as an administrator and reassign permissions to your account.

If the issue still persists, you can try to enable Built-in Administrator Account and perform commands to reassign permissions:

    1. Type cmd in the search field, right-click on the command prompt and select Run as administrator.

    2. In the command prompt window, type the following command and press the Enter:

         net user administrator /active:yes

    3. Type net user administrator password, and then press Enter.

    4. Type exit, and then press Enter.

    5. Log off from the current user account and login to the built-in administrator account.

Note: By default there’s no password for the built–in admin account, so it is not recommended to keep this account enabled. Please follow the same steps and type net user administrator /active: no to disable admin account after the troubleshooting is done or you should put a password for this account for security reasons.

    Hope these are helpful.
