HELP! Can't PXE Boot RRS feed

  • Question

  • Here is the issue I am running into with WDS. I get the computer to PXE boot initially and images fine. Then when I want to install updates and capture image, it will not PXE boot. I get the "Failed to restart TFTP" and "TFTP download failed error". I have also tried to sysprep prior to this and then PXE boot, with no luck. Any suggestions??

Which OS are you using? If you are using windows server 2008,you should check this link:

"TFTP download failed" error message during a PXE boot on a client computer that connects to a Windows Server 2008 R2-based Windows Deployment Services server

  • I'm using Windows Server 2012 R2.

  • Hi,

1.Please check the network connectivity.Did you get an valid IP address from DHCP?

2.As Microsoft server system, WDS includes a simple TFTP server, but it's hosted in the same svchost.exe process as the rest of WDS,.Please check if the WDS service has started.

3.Set server to answer all clients:

    • Run the following command to uninitialize the Windows Deployment Services server:
      Wdsutil /uninitialize-server
    • Run the following command to reinitialize the Windows Deployment Services server:
      Wdsutil /initialize-server /reminst:<Reminst folder>
For example, if the Reminst folder is named "RemoteInstall" and is located on drive C, run the following command to reinitialize the Windows Deployment Services server:
      dsutil /initialize-server /reminst:C:\RemoteInstall
    • Run the following command to change the response policy to respond to all clients:
      WDSUTIL /set-Server /AnswerClients:All

  • I do get a connection to the DHCP server and it provides an IP to the imaging computer.

I ensured the WDS service was running (also restarted).

I ran the commands in step 3 and restart WDS service (just for good measure). I am still getting TFTP error on the server. See below for error.

This is happening on all machines im trying to image. I had to rebuild the server because the last one was on a test server that crashed. Now it is doing it on all fresh builds. Keep in mind that I am running VMWare machine, if that matters.

    "Failed to restart TFTP.

    TFTP download failed.

    PXE-M0F: Exiting Intel PXE ROM.

    Operating System not found."

  • Hi,

    >>I do get a connection to the DHCP server and it provides an IP to the imaging computer.

PXE boot genrally use DHCP to get IP address, and use TFTP to dowanload the initial bootstrap program (NBP) and complementary files. So please check the firewall and router/switch has not blocking TFTP.

Or you could perform a network captuer on server.Determine if the client send out the request and the server receive that or not.

Here is the link of Windows network monitor:

  • It looks like the client and the server are definitely talking. I have pasted one of the captures from the network monitor. I'm not sure what I should be looking for. I didn't see any errors within.

  • Both server and client are VMs? Have you tried using a physical client?
    Tuesday, August 2, 2016 8:41 PM
  • Yes, same result with a physical client.
    Wednesday, August 3, 2016 12:09 PM
  • Today I have successfully PXE booted on a VM and physical machine. Nothing changed since yesterday, so this is odd to me. Both took 2 attempts to PXE boot. After the successful PXE boot, I shutdown the machine to test again. It has yet to boot either successfully since. I have attempted 5 times. Another thing I did encounter is that I am only able to have 1 machine at PXE boot at a time. If Machine 1 has PXE booted, Machine 2 will give me TFTP error. If I shutdown machine 1, then machine 2 will PXE boot. Also, once I image the machine, I am again unable to PXE boot to capture an image.

  • It appears that it will PXE boot on a physical machine, but not a virtual machine. Once it boots, however, I am getting the prompt to enter the deployment share (defaults to X:\Deploy) and will not allow me to login.

Please check the Setupact.log(Setup (specialize):X:\Windows\panther),to check the related information.
