Windows 7 Shut Down and Restart options disappear when a normal domain user logs in RRS feed

  • Question

  • We are gradually deploying Windows 7 desktops, thin clients and laptops in our organization. I created specific GPOs for each category of equipment on SCM 2 and had those GPOs deployed on our Active Directory. However, upon moving the machines under the relevant OUs, whenever a normal user logs on each machine, the Shut Down and Restart buttons disappear from the Start Menu options, and users cannot access their C drive, D drive, nor can they access any Programs from the Start Menu.

I have not specified any limitation as such in the Admin template on the GPO. What could be the cause?

To note that upon logging locally or through the domain as Administrator on the machines, everything is normal.

  • Still smells like GPO at first guess, especially since local acccounts dont seem to have same issue.

Do any of your GPOs have local loopback turned on and perhaps are merging some restrictions that the users normally wpouldn't get?

Try an RSOP.MSC or a GPRESULT command to see exactly what GPO options are being applied. Hopefully that may narrow things down....
