Backing up virtual machines from host using Windows Server Backup taking a very long time RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi all, hope you can help me on this one.

We've recently started using Windows Server Backup on a Windows Server 2008 R2 server which is a HyperV server in order to back up two virtual machines which it hosts. One of these VMs is a Server 2003 machine and the other is a SBS 2003 machine.

We had some issues with VSS when backing one of them up initially, but got this sorted and the job now runs, but it is very slow (i.e. we started the job at 10pm and it was only 33% done at 08.30am the following morning). It is backing up to a USB drive plugged into the HyperV host.

Can anyone advise on why this might be and/or how we can speed it up?

  • Hi,

I know taking backup or copying files which is GB or TB in USB 2 is very slow.

    1. May you can use USB 3 and try

    2. you can use extention HDD's to connect to server and take backup.

  • Hi Kishor,

USB 3 would be great but is something they don't have unfortunately.

The backup is working but it is just terribly slow.
