SCCM 2012 SP1 on Server 2008 R2 to SCCM 2012 R2 on Server 2012 R2 RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi,

In my environment, I run SCCM 2012 SP1 on Server 2008 R2.  It's simply a single primary site, with another 2 DP's.  What would be the best course of action to upgrade SCCM to 2012 R2 on Server 2012 R2?

Would I be able to build and commission new a Server 2012 R2 / SCCM 2012 R2 environment in parallel to my existing environment, followed by switching the clients over to 2012 R2 when ready?

    Many thanks in advance.

  • Stan,

Upgrading the OS from Win 2k8R2 to 2012 R2 is not supported.

  • It's only supported to do an in-place upgrade from Windows Server 2012 to Windows Server 2012 R2 (or any service pack upgrade) and upgrade from Windows Server 2008 R2 to Windows Server 2012 R2 is not supported (see the link provided by Paul).

To answer your question, the easiest method is probably indeed to perform a migration from the old environment to the new environment. Do keep in mind that officially it's only supported to migrate if the sites have the same site level (that doesn't mean it won't work).

  • You can also use the backup and restore procedures to move the database (and thus the site) to a new Windows Server 2012 R2 system and then upgrade the site to ConfigMgr 2012 R2.
