DPM 2016 - Cant add Deduplication RRS feed

  • Question

  • I have setup DPM 2016 and added

Using Storage Spaces across 22 disks , using 1x vDISK of 19TB.

12TB REFS MBS Data Volume - E drive

9TB NTFS Deduplication Volume F drive.

What I don't understand is when I add the storage volume into DPM it says its going to format it for its own use, but formats them both for ReFS, effectively removing the Deduplication volume.

I seem to be missing something here.???

  • Hi,

DPM 2016 wants to use MBS.

The "old" disks are only supported after a migration.

MBS needs ReFS. ReFS does not support deduplication.

-> DPM does not support using deduplication directly.

    hope it helps.

    regards

  • I fully understand that MBS is on ReFS and DeDup is on NTFS.

    I have 2x volumes.  1 REFS, 1 NTFS (dedup)

When I import into DPM Storage, it wipes the NTFS and makes it ReFS.

As far as im concerned DPM should detect the Deduplication on the volume and import as such.

    Article from MS,

    https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/system-center-docs/dpm/deploy/deduplicate-dpm-storage

    What am I missing?

  • Absolutely shocking.  I run DPM on physical hardware not a VM.

DPM should support split volumes.  MBS (for critical data) and Dedup for C drives\VHDX's.

This means I have to be selective about what I backup, which ultimately slows down my recovery.  I don't have an infinite budget for storage to put everything on MBS.

    MS sort this out!
