  • Question

  • Good day all, My friend who is a CTO in a 50% Unix/Windows enviroment for a Hospital which is closing needs help with a Windows 2003 Server issue. They have about 20 users left and need to switch from Roaming to Local profiles while still authenticating to the server. As he is a Unix Guru and no one in the IT department is left he needs help asap. Please give detailed instructions on how to do this. Cheers

  • Hello DCSE,

The following three methods are for your reference:

    A. Changing User Profile from Roaming to Local by using GPO:

1.Open Active Directory Users and Computers.
2.Click the domain and the OU where the user account resides.
3.Select all of user accounts for which to set local profile, and then click Properties.
4.Click the Profile tab, and then remove the profile path information in Profile path.

    B. Disabling Roaming User Profiles on Certain Computers

  • There are two possible scenarios:

    1) I would have to test this in a lab but I think you could remove the profile path in the user object properties (leave blank) and the next time use user logs on a new profile would be created locally. Then copy the users roaming profile folder from the server to the user's local profile folder. There may be some permission issues that's why I said lab test. Since the number of users is small I would do a manual process as described.

    2) If you are using roaming profiles and folder redirection you would need to follow the steps in this article http://support.microsoft.com/kb/888203
