Upgrading to A Larger Hardrive RRS feed

  • Question

  • I currently have a Dual-Boot Windows XP Pro and Windows Vista Ultimate 64-Bit configuration installed on a 80 Gigabyte Harddrive. I am going to  be upgrading to a 320 Gigabyte Hardrive, which I plan to run the both OS's off of, in the same dual boot configuration.
Do I absolutely have to reinstall both OS's to the new Hardrive the same way I did the first Harddrive.
Is there a way of transferring all data from the 80 GB to the 320 GB without having to reinstall everything?

  • Hello,

Based on my experience, there is no such tool provided by Microsoft, and I suggest you to reinstall the systems in your new hard drive in order to avoid some potential problems.

To help you to restore your personal data after reinstalling OS, I suggest you to use Backup Utility (For Windows XP) and Windows Easy transfer (For Windows Vista) to backup the data before. For more information about these tools, refer to following sites:

    http://www.microsoft.com/windows/products/windowsvista/buyorupgrade/easytransfer.mspx  (Windows Vista Easy Transfer)

I also made a research for tools and documents by other providers and wish they can help you if you really want to migrate all the data without reinstalling OS:

    Acronis Migrate Easy 7.0 (http://www.acronis.com/homecomputing/products/migrateeasy/)

Please Note: The third-party products discussed here are manufactured by companies that are independent of Microsoft. We make no warranty, implied or otherwise, regarding these products' performance or reliability.

  • Hello,

I’m glad to hear that it helps.

I never used Acronis Migrate Easy before, and I listed it just hoped it can help. You may post to some public forums, and check whether other engineers can share experience on using similar software.
