Move Windows Server 2012 Std Ed. OEM with CALs license to another server (from VMware to VMware) RRS feed

  • Question

  • hello there,

my previous system admin created a virtual machine under a VMware ESXi 5.5 server installing Windows Server 2012 Standard Edition OEM (it's not his fault, the manager ordered the wrong version). Now I have to move the machine to another server. I am aware that I have to change the license for the system, but I also have to buy the license for all the CALs as well?

Thank you so much for your time and patience.

    Regards.

Specifications: I have a Domain under Windows Server 2012 with about 120 CALs

  • You won't get a definitive answer here, this forum is not watched by MS employees and it for the EOL product Virtual Server 2005.  In general, CALs aren't server specific, unless they came with the OEM server license.

Your best bet for legal guidance on licensing would be Microsoft itself.  "The told me on the forums" won't pass an audit.

But, if you want to try one of the forums (you'll probably bet pointed to the licensing server again), the best place is probably the 2012 server forum here:
