VM Live Migration with Differencing Disks

  • Hello All,

I have SCVMM 2012 R2 cluster with two Windows Server 2012 R2 nodes and each node uses local storage (no shared or san storage) - vms are created on each node with one parent disk in d:\vm-parent folder and differential disks for vm in separate folder e.g. d:\vm1, d:\vm2, d:\vm3, etc.

When i live migrate the vm with storage from one node to another node, vms are getting migrated with a copy of parent disk in every vm folder d:\vm1, d:\vm2, d:\v3, etc.

After live migration, i am ending up with multiple copies of parent disk and thereby the storage utilization on the node is increasing multi-fold.

Want to know if i can live migrate vms with same links and structure i.e. with one parent disk in separate folder and differential disks using this single copy of disk as parent disk.

Would greatly appreciate if anyone has inputs on live migration with one copy of parent disk.

    Thanks in advance. /Praveen
