Activation of Window with KMS RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi,
I am running MDT 2013 and performing deployment of Windows 10.

After building a new computer I had been activating Windows by entering the Volume License Key and connecting to the internet. This method is working fine.

We have now installed a KMS server and I guess there is a method by which the clients can activate automatically through KMS.

Could someone kindly guide me as how we can achieve this.

    Thanks in advance.

  • Have you activated the KMS server with a KMS host key?  This you get from here:  From there you can configure the KMS server to do one of two things:

    1. Activate through Active Directory upon domain join, or
    2. KMS activate

Step 1 would definitely be the easiest option if you are using deployments to put new machines on the domain.

Step 1 is self-explanatory, but it won't work on anything older than Windows 8 (it will work for your Windows 10 clients).  Perform the following steps to do step 2:

    1. Flush DNS with ipconfig /flushdns
    2. Set the KMS client key on the client, this is public and you can find the information here:  Use the following command: slmgr /ipk #####-#####-#####-etc.
    3. Set the KMS host on the client using the following command: slmgr /skms KMSHOSTNAME:1688 (1688 is the default listening port for KMS)
    4. Activate using slmgr /ato.

  • Thanks for your reply.

With the Volume License, I used to insert the Windows Key inside the CustomSettings.ini file as

After completing the build the Windows activation was happening automatially when I joined the domain and logged in as admin.

Can this be achieved in any similar way for KMS activation?

  • KMS activation should work more or less silently in the background. If it doesn't, there may be different issues including issues with the KMS server or your client simply being unable to find a KMS server on the network. Take a look at possible troubleshooting steps detailed here:
