roles for a central site RRS feed

  • Question

  • if I want to set up a central site with no clients directly reporting to it, what minimum roles does it need? I suppose it will still be the top stream of the windows updates. So I would think it should have reporting point and software update point roles, but no need MP and DP roles. Is it right?

Answers

  • Yes, if you are using Software Update, SUP is also on the Central Site and will be the one configuring Software Update products etc.. on all Child sites.

Assign no clients directly to the Central Site. It will only be used for reporting, central configuration, and central packages, collections and so on.

  • Normally you will have a SUP, FSP and Reporting Service Point installed at the Central.

if all package source folders are kept on central server and packages are created on central server but assigned to DPs on child parmaries, does the central server need a DP role?

  • No need for DP on Central Site without assigned clients for disttribution.

However, you would need some space for packages to be compressed and sendt to child sites. Remember to tune adress links to handle bandwidth usage.
