  • Question

  • Recently my computer restarted without me instructing it to.

A short while ago it went into Stand By without me instructing it to.

On both occasions I was just reading on a newspaper site, had only been on the computer a short time and did not click on anything.

    Never happened before.

What could be causing this please?

  • Thank you very much for helping Arnav Sharma.

I will do as you instructed.

So from reading the link you gave me it seems there may be a software conflict.

I and a few other XP users have had unrelated problems recently with a browser, wondering if it could be connected to that?

I have noticed though that when I go on this newspaper site (dailymail.co.uk), where the incidents occurred on both occasions, my computer really struggles with loading it and locks up / intermittently becomes unresponsive. I have to wait some time before I can view it....rarely happens anywhere else.

What could cause that please? I have tried disabling plug-ins and extensions (including Shockwave Flash) but to no avail.

  • Please start with clean boot first, mostly these issues arise due to software/drivers/apps conflict during startup.

Let me know the results after clean boot. :)

  • Firstly I would like to say that I really appreciate your help and assistance Arnav Sharma, but my problem is this.

I have a genuine XP SP3 OS with Product Key......but I don't have an XP installation CD.

I have in the past had boot problems and BSODs with this computer......these were mostly rectified by computer technicians / reinstallation of Windows, although the few BSODs I had recently I tried to deal with myself.

Having a working computer is of paramount importance to me......if this were a spare computer I would be happy to go ahead and attempt a clean boot (something I've not done before)......but I am too afraid that something will go wrong and I'll end up with a black screen that I cannot deal with without an XP installation CD.

I am not currently in a position to buy a new computer or summon a computer technician.

I have not had any further unexpected Restarts / Stand Bys since I wrote this question or any further BSODs for several weeks. If this changes, of course I might have no other choice but to go ahead and attempt a clean boot.
