WSUS 3.2 - Windows 8.1: Not notifying to user that system must be restarted... RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hello,
I have had an wsus 3.2 on a WinServer 2008 SP2 (for years). When I added some Win 8.1 clients, I learned about KB2734608 and some more details: for example the new behavior of scheduling updates, resolved with an update for the GPOs.

My Windows 7 clients behave ok, as it has always been.

    My 8.1 clients:
1- correctly get the updates from my WSUS server (OK).
2- install those updates when... well, when they think is better for me (I suppose), despite my GPO setting about a fixed time of day. (OK, more or less).
3- DO NOT restart logged-out systems, nor notifies the logged-in user that system must be restarted (BAD). Only tip for users is that "Shutdown" appears as "Update and shutdown" with those tiny green arrows.
4- report status to my WSUS server (OK)

Any advice about step 3 will be MUCH appreciated (presently, I must tell each user "please...")

    Ro

  • Hi Ro,

If an update is required restart to take effect, when we lock the computer, it will display the restart information in the lower right corner of the screen.

Besides, we may try to configure the deadline of the update to force the restart.

  • Thank you; I'll give a try to the deadline approach. But, that is what we may call a workaround. And I think it will be similar to disable "Don't reboot  with logged on users".

Fact is that windows 8.1 is not obeying a GPO.

Mine is an unusual "environment": it is ok that some computers (which are VM) never (or infrequently) log off nor get locked. So, if there is no notification pop-up, it is possible that a user doesn't notice anything.

I have added a GPO requiring logon-screen when awakening from suspend (following your hint that such way they at least see the information), but I don't like that solution. Some VM not even get suspended.

I'll keep you informed ;-). Regards,
