Hyper-V Migration Question RRS feed

  • Question

  • We are currently running a 2008 Core Server with Hyper-V.  We just did an audit and realized that we are over using a couple licenses.  One of them is the Core Server.  Now that HyperV server is out...How difficult would it be to "migrate" from Core to Hyper V?  Is it as easy as backing up the Drives for the Virtual machines and the settings and re-installing Hyper-V Server and then re-establishing the VM's?

    Thanks in advance.

  • Hi!

You can use the export/import features. Make sure when migrating VM's between 2008 R1 and R2 environments that you uninstall the integration services on the VM before importing it on a Hyper-V R2 server. There is a difference in IS versions that could cause problems otherwise.

If this wouldn't work out for some reason (like R1-R2 wizard discrepancies), you just create a new virtual machine and attach the current VHD file and problem will be solved.
