BitLocker Recovery RRS feed

  • Question

  • Dear Technet Forum,

I have problem with one of my notebook in office. The notebook was running Windows 10 Pro 64 bit. Initially, our team member set up the BitLocker on the drive with auto-unlock setting. He backed-up the recovery key on removable hard disk as well. Accidentally, the removable hard disk was crashed and he didn't remember that the recovery key of the notebook was there. I think the recovery key already copied to server by him. Long time later, the notebook ran windows update. After update, it asked for recovery key which already lost since the removable hard disk was crash.
Now, I only have information of TPM ID, PCR Validation Profile, and BitLocker ID.
Is there any way, for unlocking the disk?
    Kindly need your support.

    Regards,

    Husein

  • Hello,

There is a chance you may locate the recovery key in Microsoft account:

    https://onedrive.live.com/recoverykey

You can ask the person who setup BitLocker to check his/her MS account to see if recovery key is present there.

In case if you can't locate recovery key, you may need to format the drive to use it again. This will obviously result in data loss.

    Regards.

  • Hi,

    Thank you for your reply,

I've checked the article. The person who set up the BitLocker didn't print out the recovery key information, didn't save it on any MS account or AD. He save it on removable flash drive, but accidentally the flash drive was broken. I think Microsoft has solution to unlock the drive by using BitLocker ID.
