System hangs on reboot/shutdown RRS feed

  • Question

  • I have a Dell D610 Latitude with XP Pro.  I bought it second hand with a fresh install.  Worked great for several days until I turned auto updates on.  It found 22 updates.  No problem!  I let the machine install the updates.  Now when I reboot or shut down, it takes 7 to 8 minutes!  It hangs at the "Windows is shutting down..." screen.  If I just let it run, it will shut down or reboot, but it seriously will take 7 or 8 minutes.  Holding the power button down will shut it off.

Any idea what's up?  Any way to fix it?

  • If you just did updates... try doing a restore point prior to the windows update...  I never set my system to auto updates... you don't know when the updates are performed and if the updates cause a problem... you don't know the updates my have caused the problem.
