Site Template for Internet Facing Sites RRS feed

  • No matter which site template you use, if you turn on the publishing features the ability to save a site as a template will be disabled.  The publishing features establish a number of dependencies between a site and other sites in the site collection.  So if you save the site as a template and then use it in a new site collection where publishing hasn't been enabled you run a high risk of not having all the dependencies.  So it is use is disabled when publishing is turned on.  You will see blogs that talk about how to save a publishing site as a template even when its disabled, but these have no guarantee that the template you wave will actually work.  Sometimes it will and sometimes it won't.
