IE 11 Document Modes support lifetime RRS feed

  • Question

  • Given that document modes have been deprecated as of IE 11, is there any risk that later updates to IE 11 would make the document modes obsolete? In other words, will IE 11 continue to support document mode and the selection of the appropriate mode via the x-ua-compatible header for the life of IE11?

  • In my experience, MSFT tend to use the "deprecated" word as a warning that things could change "and you have been warned".
    The timeframe for things to change, is quite variable, based on things I've seen change across Windows, IE, Office, so I think it's unlikely that you'll get anything more concrete that "it's deprecated"..

    (as an example, the correction of a long-time bug about *whereabouts* in the markup the DTD needed to be declared...)

    If you haven't read Chris Jackson's blog, I recommend it, there are lots of nuggets and tidbits in his articles;

  • Hi Don,

    Thanks, for the input. Not to harp on the topic, but my concern is whether MS will make the functionality obsolete in IE 11 with a later patch/hotfix etc. or will it remain deprecated but functional for the life of IE 11 and only removed in later versions, as has been done for Edge.

    Best Regards,

    Chris

  • Hi Tony,

    What is it that Don mentioned that I should try? My question is around the future support of the document mode feature in IE11.

    Best Regards,

    Chris

  • This post by Chris might explain a little bit (but if you're looking for a formal statement/commitment about IE11, I think you'll need to engage directly with MSFT rather than in these forums)
