how to retain windows file creation date and time when i upload into sharepoint RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi,

We have sharepoint 2007 and 2010.

The issue with sharepoint is explained below:

File created (program files related to oracle forms and reports and database object scripts) in windows desktop/server dated 15-03-2012 17:15.

Once we move the compiled forms to the server and later say on 16-03-2012 8:30, we move the files/load the documents to the sharepoint folder, sharepoint is changing the creation date and time of the file to 16-03-2012 8:30 and original file creation date and time is lost.

How do we achieve this in sharepoint.

  • Hi Srinivas,

I am not sure of any easy way to do this.  I believe this importer is supposed to be able to do it but it doesn't work for me. http://spmigration.codeplex.com/

The other option is to reset the dates after the file upload?  Here is some code to do just that. http://www.orbitone.com/en/blog/archive/2009/03/28/preserve-and-created-and-modified-information-when-importing-a-document-in-sharepoint-.aspx

Sorry I cannot be of more help.

    Cheers

  • Hi,

This is not possible out of the box. Moreover the creation and modified date are system generated fields.

Hence I would suggest you to create new fields to store these values and to populate them automatically implement event receiver.

  • Hi Srinivas,

did you find a solution in the meantime?

We're having the same problem with SharePoint 2013 - I would have thought that it is a problem for most people working with SharePoint...

    Kind regards

  • Hi, I am replying to such an old thread because I succeeded to solve a similar problem today using an excellent tool SPFileZilla (https://spfilezilla.codeplex.com). Using this tool, the original file date of last modification is preserved, the item creation date is set to date of copying the file to Sharepoint. All without the need of any custom attributes, event receivers or a single line of code.
