Server 2012 RDS question regarding session collections RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi there,

I can't seem to find an answer to this....

My understanding is that in server 2012 you can only have a session collection in RDS do 1 role at a time, that being RemoteApps or Remote Desktop.

I've currently got a single 2012 R2 Server setup for RDS with a session collection but have had to make an unsupported registry change to publish the remote desktop to web access.

I guess my question really is, why does server 2012 restrict you to one or the other instead of allowing you to host both RemoteApps and Remote Desktop session from the same session collection / server?

Ideally we'd like to host both remote apps and remote desktop sessions from the same server, like we similarly do with Citrix.

    Thanks,

    Will

  • Hi Will,

As you may know already I agree with you on this.  You should be able to publish a full desktop as well as RemoteApps on the same session collection just like you can with Server 2008 R2 without clunky workarounds.

One reason why it [both desktop and RemoteApps] is not allowed is for consistency sake with virtual desktop collections.  On a client OS (Win7/Win8.1) you cannot have both a RemoteApp session and a full desktop session connected at the same time.  Obviously this is easily solved by allowing it for session collections and disallowing it for virtual desktop collections, however, that is not the way it is today--it is disallowed for both.

Hopefully Microsoft will add this capability back in a future version.
