  • Question

  • Hi All,

I hope you are all well.

We seem to have an issue with our production line Win-7 machines. This has been reported as a fault and WSUS Definition updates seem to be the culprit. Microsoft Security updates and all other Microsoft updates are not applied to these machines on Definitions, the reason being they are on the production line and cannot have updates applied.

What I wanted to do was run Performance and Resource Monitor to find out what was going on, however, I do not have specific times of when these issues occur as they are random. What I wanted to know was how much memory etc do these applications take up and can I have them running for a 24 hour period in order to get the test results back. It is imperative that we do not slow down these machines unnecessarily. Indeed is there a better native windows tool that could help us diagnose this issue.

Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.

  • Hi,

Do we have an issue about installing updates in windows 7 by WSUS? Are there any errors when we install updates?

To check updates issue, we may needn't to collect monitoring logs. We can check update logs in C:\Windows\Logs\CBS.

    For your reference: https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/deployment/update/windows-update-logs

Please try to download a update from the following website and install it manually for a test:

    https://www.catalog.update.microsoft.com/Home.aspx

    Run Windows Update Troubleshooter:

    https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/4027322/windows-update-troubleshooter

If the issue is related to WSUS, it's recommended to submit a new case in WSUS forum as they will be more professional on this issue.

This is WSUS forum link: https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/home?forum=winserverwsus

    Thanks for your understanding.

    Best regards,

    Yilia

  • Hi Yilia

I need to know. can I use Perf and Sysmon and how much resources will they take up. As mentioned I need to monitor some client machines during unsociable hours. The only tool I know that is able to do this is perf and sysmon, but I do not know if I would be able to kick of a job and let it run for 24 hours on production machines. I need to know how much resources are taken up.

    Can you help.

  • Hi,

It's not recommended to let the monitor tools run for 24 hours, it will collect very large files and affect your pc.

The best practice should be that start perfmon and let the issue reproduce, then run the tool for a while and stop.

From your description, the error of updates are not applied to these machines is more related to windows update issue, please try to submit this issue in WSUS forum for further help.

    Thanks for your understanding.

    Best regards,

    Yilia
