FAST manageable for one admin? RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi

We are planning an intranet based on SharePoint 2010 Enterprise and we will also need a capable search solution. But we have only one full time SharePoint admin (me), so is FAST too complicated to handle for one employee who will also have the SharePoint farm in general to manage? I estimate that we have the equivalent of between 10 and 20 million documents on different systems (fileshares, Exchange, SAP, SharePoint, Notes).

    Any thoughts?

    Regards
    Jakob

  • Hi Jakob,

From my experience, when the system is up, the maintenance is not that difficult, but setting it up is a hard and complicated job.

I'm working for a company that provides such work and I can say that it requires a specialist because there's a lot to learn, there are a lot of errors during the implementation and a lot of data manipulation which requires some programming - not something complicated, but you need to know what to do.

Just the installation alone is a major headache. Almost all of our customers never managed to install it by themselves.

It's not a one person job, especially if he's also up to his neck with sharepoint administration :)

  • Hi Jakob,

If you get help setting it up it certainly makes it easier, and should be manageable by one person once running. Not too much different to maintain than regular search. Just include monitoring of the servers a part of your regular monitoring.

That said, setting up a single server FS4SP install is not that difficult if you read the steps carefully on TechNet and make sure you don't skip anything.

  • Thanks Amir.

What you are saying is that if we get expert help with installation and configuration, it is manageable for a single administrator?
