  • Question

  • Going forward, can a networked, domain-member Windows XP computer be considered "safe" as long as it does not have Internet access?  Patches are current, and current antivirus.

  • Yes.  Without internet access and with good anti-virus that is regularly updated to catch any USB drive malware, etc. your system should be just fine.

  • Yes and No. Reason being exploits are still developed that can harm XP machines. Since MS is no longer supporting this operating system patches to cover those exploits will not likely be developed. These exploits can be carried out through the local area network and infect an un-patched machines. Now on to the aspect of 'Yes'...

Good antivirus, and a firewall on the machine can make a lot of difference even internal to the network, local USB drives and exploits on the net.

Best policy is to keep machines as up to date as you can even if that means upgrading operating systems unfortunately.
