DPM 2010 GUI crashing Event ID: 955 from Source MSDPM cannot be found RRS feed

  • HELP!!!

    Hello,

    I am hoping someone can give me a solid answer on this. I have searched the web and come across other people who have had this issue and each has been replied with "we have seen similar issues and then there is a link to a Microsoft forum) which is dead.

    Anyway, I am running two DPM 2010 ver: 3.0.7696.0 on Windows Server 2008 R2 systems. I have been in the midst of moving my old DPM 2007 environment to this new one by re-creating pg's on these servers. I am also protecting each DPM 2010 server with the other (circular protection I think Jason Buffington called it).

    Recently while adding a Sharepoint PG from one DPM to the other (We will call them DPM1 and DPM2) I experienced a major crash on DPM2. I had to open a case for this one which is still open. [REG:110092047707860]. Last i heard "Engineers" were working through the logs? I have managed to bandaid the problem be removing the Sharepoint pg. That was over two weeks ago.

    Over the last 3 days or so i have begun to experience a different type of crash. When I go in to view backups first thing in the morning I am presented with a Windows message informing me MMC has stopped working and needs to close? Acknowledging this error closes DPM? The event log for this message reads the following:

    This is happening on both DPM1 and DPM2. I have gone through and checked, it appears that recovery points are still being created. My dilema is There is no way I can reinstall or rebuild anything. I really need some help with this one as it could potentially stop my migration project from 2007 to 2010.

    Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!

  • Hi,

    fyi: this 955 is the actual internal DlsError.

    Solution must really come from the case you have open and log inspection.
    Meanwhile, what is worth trying (if you not already did), is to "Modify" the group with this resource, tick through without actually changing anything but "OK/Next" on everything, not "Cancel".

    This causes all job schedules to be removed and recreated and may resolve the issue although the error states doing exactly that. Then still, to the case engineer it is important to know this happens during this type of refresh rather than specifically running a consistency check.

  • Ruud,

    The original error in my one DPM machine (DPM2) was the console and services crashing with error# 917. I located the problem myself before someone discovered the problem in one of the logs. Issue was Sharepoint members being protected on DPM1 then by DPM2 through it's protection of that server (Circular protection). After i removed the members no more crash with 917 however i am not able to re-add these members. They are fine on the DPM1 server which is protecting them from the source, just not on the secondary.

    I have not had any breakthrough on why this problem originaly happened. Immediatly after correcting it both my DPM GUI's began to crash with 955? Thankfully this is not like the other and does not stop DPM from actually working. It only crashes the GUI. However I can't continue to maintain a product when the GUI continuously crashes.

    Microsoft has been working on this for a Month and I only speak to person working on it sporadically. I am not exactly sure what you mean by this is an internal error? As for modifying each of my Protection groups I can try and go through, however I do not believe they are the problem. I do believe the DPM circular protection of the other is. In DPM 2007 I only protected SQL db of the other DPM server. With the new product and according to the DPM folks at MMS you could protect the other DPM's pg's and back (circular). Ever since I set this up I have had nothing but problems.

  • James,
    do you have an engineer name?
    Pls. raise the case to severity "A"

    Few things;
    Although often referred to as "circular" literally taken that is still not support. What is supported is what I call CROSS protection;
    - DPM1 is primary for DS0-4 and secondary for DS5-9
    - DPM2 is primary for DS5-9 and secondary for DS0-4
    But DPM1 cannot protect DS0-4 on DPM2 as another secondary of some sort which would be truly circular.
    - DPM1 and DPM2 can protect each others local DPMDB/BMR/etc...  as primary only.
    But DPM1 and DPM2 cannot protect each others locals as secundary as well which would also be true circular.
    DPM1/DPM2 can also not directly protect each others protected data other than in a primary/secondary constellation.

    A primary/secondary relation is 'forever' (for the live time of the DPM installation).
    Say DPM1 does primary for Ds0 and DPM2 does secondary for Ds0 and Ds0 switches to DPM2 (now primary for Ds0).
    Now Ds0 can only switch back to an existing or recovered DPM1 installation (read DPMDB), not another one (say DPM3).
    Also, if DPM1 cannot be recovered, you cannot use a DPM3 as new secundary for Ds0, DPM2 knows Ds0 must go back to DPM1 or stick with DPM2, end of game.

    I'm not exactly clear on the details of which moves you did but I recon somehow managed to get in a bad spot regarding the above. Whether or not that may/could crash the UI is yet another story.

    Maybe some direct DPMDB manupulation can help (have not heard of it yet) but I cannot help you with that.
    Should rebuilds become possible (or only option) I can help with the 'shortest' way (least data joggling) but first needs to understand were exactly you stand right now, what works and what not and we'll do that offline (ruudb@microsoft.com).
