Setting up a KMS host RRS feed

  • Question

  • We have two domains in our environment, lets call them D1 and D2.  The KMS host in D1 was configured to publish it's SRV record to both domains.  For redundancy we want to setup a KMS host in D2 (using the same key) and have it publish to both domains as well.  Will this be a problem having two VLMCS SRV records in DNS?  How will servers know which one to use if they are setup for automatic detection?  We do not want to specify the host to use on the servers.

  • Hello,

DNS will respond to the queries with the different records, see this link for KMS discovery,

Meant to include this link as well

See method 4 where it talks about KMS auto discovery and how DNS random hands out the KMS host names to clients that query DNS.

One other note, a KMS client will attempt to query for the same KMS host that it activated against the last time( it caches the name and uses the same one if available), if it doesn't find it, it will ask DNS for a KMS host name.
