File and Printer sharing turning off by itself Windows 7 SP1 RRS feed

  • Question

  • I keep trying to turn File and Printer Sharing in Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Network and Sharing Center\Advanced sharing settings but every time I turn it on and select Save Changes then go bacl to Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Network and Sharing Center\Advanced sharing settings it's turned off again. I saw the article for Win 10 having the same problem.Disabling my firewall has no impact. Would this also be related to why File Explorer refuses to show the network category "Computers"?

  • Not a lick. I thought there might be a registry setting but trying to one in the garbage heap registry is nigh impossible. At this point, I really thinking about ditching Windows and jump to Linux.  I'm not using Windows Server. It's straight Home Network gig.

  • 1) System backup? I do but Aomei, the software I used, can't open or restore it.

    2) New Admin Account? Has no impact. File & Print Sharing continues to turn itself off.

Should I bite the bullet and, UGH!, upgrade to Win10?

  • hi,
4 enter below command in command prompt(opened as admin) on problematical win7
    sfc /scannow
    dism /online /cleanup-image /scanhealth
    dism /online /cleanup-image /checkhealth
    dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth

5 if the problem persist and you confirm you have a normal state win7,we can create a bootable USB flash drive to restore a client computer
    https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-server-essentials/manage/restore-a-full-system-from-an-existing-client-computer-backup

    https://www.dell.com/support/article/sg/en/sgdhs1/sln312132/introduction-to-windows-server-2012-essentials-client-restore?lang=en

6 if the problem persist ,because the end of the Windows 7 lifecycle is set for January 2020,so upgrading to win10 is also good choice.

  • DISM didn't recognise cleanup-image commands. SFC came back negative. Upgraded in place to Win 10. File and Print Sharing turned on automatically. Still cannot see other computers when selecting Network in Windows Explorer. Even with Norton 360 disabled they don't show. Something in the router our POS ISP supplied?

  • 7) All turned on

    8) Yes

    9)No effect

    10) Ran gpresult. Trying to find file.

    11) All services mentioned are running. Did change settings to Automatic from Manual.

The one NAS does now appear, showing its IP address, not its name, but the system will not connect. I get a message the device is refusing to accept connections. Quite interesting as I haven't changed ANY setting in ANY of the NAS devices since they were installed.
