Deploy Install.WIM directly and modify it with offline patch, appx applications RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi Team,

Is it possible to modify windows 8.1 install.wim as offline image servicing may be using DISM (injecting language pack, provision appx applications, offline patching etc. and then add it as custom image to deploy? Is it recommended and is something that is doable ? any pointers will be appreciated. Thanks

  • Yes, all of those are possible.  Once you've patched it, you can certainly import it into MDT and deploy it.

There are some "online" operations (finalizing the installation of what you've added) on first boot, but that probably wouldn't be noticeable.

  • Yes you sure can. You can use a command line based dism or the DISM GUI found here

    http://www.vladan.fr/dism-gui-4-0-utility/

You can inject updates, language packs, drivers, etc...

  • Hi,

Any suggestions on this if say I already have my OS imported into MDT (i.e. a pre-existing install.wim located at "E:\DeploymentShare\Operating Systems\Windows Server 2012 R2\sources\install.wim")? Can I just copy that install.wim, make my changed then copy it back to my DeploymentShare?

    THanks!

  • Yes you can. Make changes to the WIM. Import it BACK into MDT and regenerate the files...

  • So to be clear, I should...

    1. Delete the OS from MDT (specifically, "completely delete these files")
    2. Import the updated OS source files.
    3. Update the Deployment Share (specifically, "completely regenerate the boot images").

Thanks for the help Prince Ali Ababwa!

  • Thats good. You dont have to regenerate the boot images because that will only affect the winpe file and NOT the OS file. I create an offline media so I meant regenerate a new ISO file... Also your task sequence might error out when you open it because you have attached a new OS wim. Simply scroll down to that section and select your new wim!

    Thats all
