Is it necessary to backup shares as well the volume they reside on in DPM 2010? RRS feed

  • Question

  • If you backup up the shares as well as the volume that they sit on, do you duplicate data in your backup by backing up the same data twice?

I am currently trying to reduce the size of my backups as I am close to the storage pool limit so need to reduce what I can.

    Thanks,

    Chris.

  • Hi Chris624,

It is not required to backup the shares and the volume. If you are protecting the volume that the shares reside on then it is the same data. DPM utilizes SIS and SIS should ensure that only one instance of a file exists.  If there is a duplicate of the same file in your DPM storage pool SIS should take one of these and make it a pointer to the other file. Here is more info about SIS http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd573308%28WS.10%29.aspx and here is a thread where we are discussing SIS on DPM http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/dpmsetup/thread/2a358034-99d4-4f5e-ae55-e93395219ea6.

What do you mean "Happy to help"? You told him SIS would take care of duplicate data and when he removed the shares the size of his backups shinked considerably? Does SIS not work within the whole protection group? If a file is on both the share and the volume (likely) it will not be de-duped?

  • Hello all,

Although Janne_b sound disgruntle she does bring up a good point for me as a new bee. Can you please try to explain why his backup shrank if SIS is working in the background. Or is this a quirky situations that only time and investigation can explain.
