Outlook Copies Messages instead of Moving them RRS feed

  • Question

  • There's a bunch of threads about this, all of which are locked with no satisfactory responses/answers (seriously, why???).

Creating this thread as I found a solution!

In Outlook, when attempting to move messages/folders to another mailbox (eg a shared mailbox), the messages COPY instead of Move. Tried different machines, outlook profiles, user accounts etc.

I also noticed I couldn't delete the emails either, and would get this error "Some items cannot be deleted. They were either moved, already deleted, or access was denied”

  • Solution:

The Mailbox Recoverable Items Quota has been reached on the source mailbox.

Get-MailboxFolderStatistics -Identity MailboxUser -FolderScope RecoverableItems | fl name,*size*

If yes, either increase the quota or delete the contents in the RecoverableItems folder based on criticality of the user

To delete the content; use the below Exchange Shell Script

    Search-Mailbox -Identity MailboxUser -SearchDumpsterOnly -DeleteContent
