Upgrade MDT to v8443 - Best Practices? RRS feed

  • Question

  • What is the best practice for upgrading MDT from v2013u1 to v8443?

We currently have MDT 2013u1 integrated with SCCM 2012 r2.  This is being used for software, updates and OSD using MDT task sequences using USB media (no PXE).  These task sequences use MDT's UDI.

We are moving to SCCM 1706, thus we'll need the newer MDT along with the newer ADK

    • Do we uninstall the old MDT then install the new MDT?  or Do we install MDT over the old version?
    • What impact will the upgrade have to our existing task sequences, especially the UDI?
    • Obviously, we will need to have a new MDT package for SCCM, can we continue to use the old one if needed?
    • Any "gotchas"?

    Thanks in advance!

  • Let's break it down.

MDT installer will detect older version, uninstall it and then install the new version.

You would need to create a new package, since there is a fairly large delta between MDT 2013 Update 1 and build 8443 in terms of changes to underlying scripts and TS templates. I do not think there is a scenario where you would need to use older MDT package.

Best practices recommendation is to recreate TS (again, because TS templates changed between Update 1 and 8443). Personally, I take a somewhat differentiated approach - sometimes it is sufficient to check for differencies in TS & unattended.xml files and adjust if necessary.
