Lync 2013 On Prem Hybrid with Exchange Online RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hoping to see if anyone else is trying to do what we are and can give some guidance.  We have set up an Exchange 2013/Exchange Online Hybrid configuration and are in the process of moving all of our on-prem mailboxes to Exchange Online.  However, we want to maintain our Lync 2013 on-prem environment. We don't want users to be able to access Lync externally, but we do want Lync conversation history in Outlook, presence, etc. to be available.

All the guides I see out there are for making Lync on-prem available externally, but we only want Lync to be able to connect to Exchange Online.  We've followed various guides to set up a Lync Edge server (particularly this one: https://www.sherweb.com/blog/office-365/installing-lync-2013-edge-server) but it doesn't seem to be working correctly.  Can anyone confirm to me what settings a Lync Edge Server and Lync FE server would need have enabled to just allow successful connectivity to Exchange Online?  Thanks for any guidance on this.

  • Hi HeyHey173,

According to your description, you want to configure integration between Lync Server 2013 and Exchange Online.

To achieve this goal, you must deploy Lync Edge Server. And if you need the conversation history and presence functions, you could not block the Lync external access, please note about this.

For your issue, you should deploy Lync Edge Server at first, about how to do this you could also refer to the following blog: Skype for Business 2015 Edge Server Deployment, it is similar to Lync Server 2013. After you deploy it, you could try to login Lync client in the external network to check whether the deployment is correct.

After Lync Edge Server deploy correctly, you need to configure the integration between Lync Server and Exchange online. You need to do the following steps:
    1. Configure a shared SIP address space
    2. Configure a hosting provider on the Edge Server
3, Verify replication of the updated Central Management store
Details about this you could refer to the official document: Configuring on-premises Lync Server 2013 integration with Exchange Online

  • We've already created the Lync Edge server, going through all the steps in those articles, but we are still having intermittent problems with conversation history from Lync populating to Outlook.  The problem, I believe, is stemming from the fact that we need to block external Lync access to our users, but allow Exchange online to reach our Lync Edge server, so we've only allowed Microsoft IPs through our firewall.

One thing I've noticed is that this registry key value keeps getting set to 0:

    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\16.0\Lync\SIPaddress\OAuthUsed

If I change it to 1 sometimes the conversation history gets populated.  Hopefully that information can help someone pinpoint our issues.  Thank you.

  • Hi HeyHey173,

According to your description, it seems you have enabled Modern Authentication in the Exchange Online. In this environment, you need to set the registry key value to 1 as you provided.

For your issue, please also refer to the official document: Info about AllowAdalForNonLyncIndependentOfLync setting in Skype for Business, Lync 2013, and Exchange Online, please make sure you have done the settings the official document provided.
