Windows Encrypting File System (EFS) RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi

New Vista user. I wanted to encrypt a folder/files, so had a look in the Help and Support which revealed the above solution.

After setting a test file to Encrypted Contents via the file properties and saved and backed up the key all is well *except*, I find I can open the file quite normally without being asked for a password etc.

Am I barking up the wrong tree in thinking the EFS would require a password to open encrypted files/folders on my computer? Perhaps EFS is only for exterior use (ie in transit or on another computer)?

I have tried to make sense of the Help and Support documentation, but it never refers to the points I'm having problems with. Although it definately seems to suggest that it does actually do what I want.
