DPM 2016 Build 5.0.322 - There is not enough space in DPM storage pool volume (ID 33515) RRS feed

  • Question

  • We recently rolled out DPM 2016 with the following setup:

    • Running in Hyper-V, windows server 2016 for both host and guest
    • DPM Database running SQL Server 2014 sp2
    • Build number is 5.0.322.0

We're constantly having some jobs fail with error:

There is not enough space in DPM storage pool volume   (ID 33515)

This is despite there being plenty of room available in the relevant storage pools, for example allocating 7tb to a 350gb Hyper-V VM (no checkpoints etc) will still fail with this error. This happens with both initial backups and subsequent replicas. Occasionally with enough consistency checks we might get a backup to complete successfully before it going back to inconsistent again.

Unfortunately as we've upgraded to servers running Windows Server 2016 so reverting to DPM2012r2 isn't an option.

  • As per https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/c70ccc41-61e9-4f7f-a49d-a870aa58c2af/dpm-2016-could-not-find-a-suitable-storage-with-enough-free-space-id-33510?forum=dpmstorage do you have a disk or a volume added to your storage pool?

  • Hi Miha,

Thankyou for taking the time to respond, however as stated in my initial post:

"This is despite there being plenty of room available in the relevant storage pools"

There was never any issue setting up the storage pools, just the incredibly poor performance and non-stop error messages.

The solution was to spin up a new vm running Windows Server 2012r2 and install DPM 2016 on that, as now we can protect Windows Server 2016 workloads without needing to use modern storage / ReFS.
