The Shared Services DB server name is wrong, but I cannot change it RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi, I'm looking to install ControlPoint on a small farm, using a Virtual version of our servers.

I just discovered a whole bunch of errors in the Application event log, which led me to look at the Shared Services settings in Central Admin. There I can see the name of the 'SSP Database  server'. The problem is, this server does not exist on the test (or live) environment).

Not aware of all the implications of this, but I presume this will cause us some difficulties!

Why can't I change the name of the server? We do appear to have SharedService1 DB on a quite different server, but I don't seem able to direct MOSS to use that one?

What more info could I provide that would be useful?

Thanks in advance for any suggestions?

  • you may be able to use the windows\system\cliconfig.exe utility.  I would test this out in a test environment first, it may forward ALL sql connections.

This utility is used to create a SQL Alias when moving all databases to a new server as described at http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc512725(office.12).aspx

Like I said, use caution and make sure your backups are recent and complete as it may cause more issues than it fixes
