does MIM 2016 SP1 support Exchange 2016 GALsync? RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi all.

I'm currently working on a project. It includes connecting Exchange servers of 20 companies so they can route mail to each other, and be able to send email to every user in each domain without knowing his email address. e.g when they put "T" in "To" field in microsoft outlook, it autocompletes names starting with T in each domain.

Since Federated Sharing doesn't do GALsync, I suggested using Microsoft Identity Manager 2016 to sync GAL between domains automatically. But i have a couple of questions.

1.Does MIM 2016 SP1 support Exchange GALsync for Exchange 2016? (Document says it doesn't, but I heard some microsoft tech guy at Summit in UK said it does and i really hope it does)

2.Does MIM 2016 Evaluation software support Exchange 2013 CU 14? (Cause it couldn't detect our setup)

3.Is there any possible way to do a failover installation of MIM 2016 on 2-3 servers?

4.Is there any trick/extra thing to do for instaling MIM 2016? (Cause after we installed it, FIM 2010 R2 popped up (without SP1), so it couldn't detect Exchange 2013)

5.Is there any way to test out MIM 2016 SP1? (It's only available on MSDN accounts)

    Thanks in advance

Currently Exchange 2016 provisioning with MIM SP1 falls under commercially reasonable support. As it was not fully tested with the scenario you speak. As you can see Exchange 2016 is not listed for the sync engine :  Mis does support 2013 but the drop down will only show 2010 it uses the same remote PowerShell api.

Failover for sync is a warm standby. There is multiple ways to achieve your disaster recover
    1. have a server configured with Sync and pointed to secondary SQL and Activate when needed :
    2. Configure same server with independent SQL DB and only perform imports and Sync Only (No Exports) - Like AADConnect Standby server . When ready just update run profiles to export.

Your last question MSDN account ? Not sure what you mean here but you can try MIM for 180 days , if you want to continue once purchased just uninstall and reinstall licensed bit , point to exciting DB

    Cheers happy Idenitity

  • Hey there David and thank you for the reply.

So If i'm assuming right, you're saying even MIM 2016 SP1 doesn't support Exchange 2016 GALsync, did i get it right?

and update/hotfix/service pack planned to resolve this issue? Because my clients are gonna have us update their Exchange structure to Exchange 2016.

Yes i've downloaded MIM 2016, But i wanna try MIM 2016 SP1 & i can't download this version since it's not available on evaluation center. I want to make sure i can use MIM 2016 SP1 for my project.

Thank you very much for the Failover solution. It's a very creative way to do it.

  • Yes currently Exchange 2016 for sync is not support/tested. My advise is to test it to see if it works for you . If you need support it would fall under commercially reasonable support. This mean that if you call in and it is a issue with the interop it could take some time to resolve.

    Hope this helps

  • Thanks again David.

How can i report the issue (if any) to microsoft?

Is there anyway to try out MIM 2016 with SP1?

    Thanks again
