GAL and Outlook 2011 for the Mac RRS feed

  • Question

  • How do I access my company's GAL in Outlook 2011 for the Mac? All I see are contacts that I've entered, locally.

  • If this is for BPOS (Exchange Online), please send a screenshot of your settings to v-datrau@microsoft.com (myself), and I'll make sure everything is configured properly.  You should be able to see all of your company's users/groups in the options provided.

If you are configuring this for an on-premise solution or another hosted solution other than BPOS, you will want to visit the Mac forums: http://www.officeformac.com/ms/ProductForums/Office/6353/0.

If it wasn't difficult, it wouldn't be fun, but why's it got to be this much fun.

  • Unfortunately, you can not access the GAL in Outlook 2011. Only on PC Outlook. Sorry.

  • Hi

You should be able to get the Exchange address book added to your list of address books in outlook from your "Account Settings" window, selecting Add Address Book and choosing LDAP.GAL integration works in Outlook for OSX through LDAP

  • Imran,

This is absolutely incorrect.  BPOS does not provide external-facing LDAP servers to connect to via the Directory Services option in Outlook 2011 (or Entourage 2008 WSE for that matter).

What IS available is, when you are typing in the To or CC lines, it will perform a directory search via EWS and provide results from both the local cache as well as "Directory" which searches the GAL.  This is done on the fly by Outlook 2011 ... I was quite impressed by it.

If it wasn't difficult, it wouldn't be fun, but why's it got to be this much fun.

  • what if you don't have the name or don't have the spelling, can you look up a name or search the GAL similar to how you can do that in Outlook 2010 PC client?

  • Bump. We are faced with the same problem. Any solution to this? We want to see the GAL like what we have in OUTLOOK for WINDOWS.

  • And another 'bump' - I can't believe I'm reading this thread....there's no way to browse the GAL via Outlook 2011 on the Mac? You've got to be kidding. How could such a basic feature not be supported? -Ben

  • Greetings all!

This question has been answered by Dan Trautman in another thread here: http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/onlineservicesexchange/thread/8a9c2e3f-7e7a-4c90-bb7f-662bae3f2495/

ok, a few answers to the past 2 questions:

    1. For BPOS-S, Contact Search does not work as this requires an exposed LDAP server, which we don't provide.
    2. When you start typing in the TO/CC/BCC fields, it performs an EWS lookup which is why you get search results

As for location, I do not know if EWS searches on this specifically, but I'm not aware that location is a searchable option.

  • I am not sure if it still a question after so many years. Apologies if it has already been answered by anyone else. I am a newbie so please excuse....

However I was also trying to find a solution for the same and what I did in my Mac OSx was that I added my exchange account in MAC's contact app by adding a account for the same but unchecked the mail option and selected all others like Contacts, notes, reminders & Calendars.

Although in the Outlook 2011 app the search wont work the way it works in PC but using the above workaround you can search for contacts and their other details very well you just need to go to your contact app rather than the Outlook app and search your contact.

  • To answer your question, the reason this is still an issue is that there is not 100% feature parity between the two products.  The other difference is that they both use differing methods to connect to Exchange.  Outlook 2010/2013 use MAPI and RPC/HTTP(s) to connect while Outlook 2011 uses EWS.  Both require different access/API methods and both have different features available to them.

TLDR: I have not seen/heard of any change in how this works.  If you want to search the GAL, you can either start typing the name in the To/Cc/Bcc fields or open OWA.

FYI: please create a new thread and post in the appropriate forum.  This thread is several years old and is for a product that is no longer available.

You will want to post any questions in these forums: http://community.office365.com/en-us/f/default.aspx

    Have a great day,

  • Hi. I know this is a little late but I hope it helps those who are still looking for the and.

I found a way to get the GAL work in Mac Office 2011.

You need to open the account and edit the search base.
You can try this option: ou=Users,dc=your,dc=domain,dc=com [eg. ou=User,dc=henry,dc=sg]

I use this setting for the O365 with exchange server in my workplace.
