Skype for Business Cross forest migration. RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi Experts,

One of customer has the below environment.

    Forest A:

    Active directory installed

Skype for Business 2015 Server installed.

    Forest B:

Skype for Business 2015 Server installed.

    Plan:

    >> Customer wants to move users from Forest A to Forest B (cross forest SfB migration) and decommission the Skype for Business server in Forest A.

    >> Once users are moved to SfB server in Forest B, customer wants to keep the AD in Forest A and make Forest A as User forest and Forest B as resource forest.

    >> Then wants to install Exchange Server in Forest B so that we can go with multiforest supported scenario (Multiple forests in a resource forest topology) - According to this article: https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/mt603995.aspx

    Questions:

    1. Is this the right plan to implement? If so, what would be the best practices?

    2. Will there be any implication, impacts etc in doing so.

    Please help. Many thanks.

  • Hi SBHV,

Thanks for your post in our forum.

I couldn’t do a test for this environment because of the limited resource.

Based on my research, SFB is supported the resource forest in the topology, so you could move users from forest A to forest B and keep the AD in forest A.

SFB server is supported the following topology:

    Single forest with single domain

Single forest with a single tree and multiple domains

Single forest with multiple trees and disjoint namespaces

Multiple forests in a central forest topology

Multiple forests in a resource forest topology

Multiple forests in a Lync resource forest topology with Exchange Online

For more details, please refer to the following, it’s similar to SFB 2015

  • SBHV,

I have never done this before but here is a guide from the internet. Lync forest Migration.

The only thing is it seems a bit more manual, but it should work.
