Missing Records in two SharePoint Lists RRS feed

  • Question

  • In SharePoint 2007 we have two tracking lists, one using template "Project Tasks" and the other "Issue Tracker".

Both just started dropping records intermitently. A Task is created and an Alert sent. Later the Task is missing, as if it were never there.

You can see an Item, with an ID like 3191, was created. The Task was edited and details updated. There is an email trail of updates.  Later, we check and find that ID is unused. I created a new Item and 3191 was reused for the new task.

This just started happening a week ago on a system that has been running fine for years. SP2 was installed in early March of this year. Any ideas what might cause this?

  • Hi,

Because of SQL load and parallel item creation, the list ID generation can have gaps. The possible deletion, the recycle bin, export/import of data for any reason could cause problems.

  • Hi,

Please go to the list settings > Information management policy check if there has any policy in these two lists, and in the policy delete the item when the item expires.

  • Have you checked the user and administrator level recycle bins to see if they exist there?

Although normally if something is just deleted it's ID wouldn't be reused.

  • There is no Information Rights Policy Set and nothing in the Recycle Bins. And the IDs are being reused in all but one case. I did find one instance where a number was skipped (3202 present, no 3203, 3204 present). It's the most current ones "resetting" no old one.

What about MOSS or SQL caches? Are there any ways a cache somewhere could be cleared before being written out that might make IDs disappear and reuse?
